Shaykh al-Albānī: On Combining Between Wisdom and Upholding the Truth and Refuting the Opposers

Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) explains that while wisdom (i.e. gentleness, softness) is used in clarification of the truth, it should not be to the point of neglecting to openly clarify the truth.

Question:

O Shaykh, what we have noticed now is that some people—for the sake of the second method, which is using wisdom with the one being called—want to silence you from clarifying the truth, so that you come to them easily. This is widespread among the callers now.

Shaykh al-Albānī:

Okay, remember with me His saying, be He exalted: “O you who believe, upon you is (the responsibility for) yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.” (5:105-). so if I call to the call of truth first, and second, with wisdom and good admonition, but you — pardon me — as an example, want me not to use wisdom, and to speak the truth (only). so what will harm me? That is, in the end (of the matter) and in short, what do I have to do with people?

What is important is for me to know whether I have combined between speaking the truth, calling to this truth with wisdom and good admonition or not. If I do not combine (them both), I may speak the truth and not use wisdom, and this is found, and I may use wisdom and compromise with it until I neglect speaking the truth. Therefore, this is not correct and nor is the other one correct. What is correct is for us to combine between calling to the truth and wisdom and good admonition.

As for any Zayd among the people or a group of them who want us to remain silent in the name of wisdom and not speak frankly, then this without doubt, is not from truth at all. Therefore, we combine between the two affairs, and we strive with ourselves in combining between the two rights, the right of calling (to the truth) and the right of using wisdom and good admonition.
