Shaykh al-Albānī: Regarding the Matter of Whether to Maintain Silence Or Refute An Oppressor

IN HIS INTRODUCTION to his refutation of Abū Ghuddah, Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) addressed an important matter regarding silence and open refutation with respect to an aggressor, liar, falsifier and oppressor. While the prevailing wisdom among people may be to ignore him, especially if he, in his arrogance, cannot be cured, there are broader wisdoms that return back to those besides him. A translation of the introduction is provided, an excerpt of which is provided below, and the full text can be downloaded from the link further below.

ʿAllāmah, Shaykh Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (رحمه الله) said:[1]

To proceed: One of the greatest calamities of our time is that the Muslim student of knowledge is forced to waste much of his time defending himself and refuting the accusations and falsehoods leveled against him by some people who neither fear Allāh nor feel shame before His servants, in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم): “Among the things that people have learned from the words of [wisdom] of the earlier prophethood is: If you have no shame, then do as you wish.”

As the poet says:

If you guard neither your honour nor fear the Creator,
Nor feel shame before [His] creatures, then do whatever you please.
If you approach a man and honour his right,
Yet he remains oblivious to your right, then severing ties is the better course.

Though it is well known that the one who has no shame has no cure and hence, reproaching him will not benefit, it might appear obvious therefore, that it is best to turn away from him, and to leave him and his affair (alone), as the poet said:

If a man is endowed with a shameless face,
(And) proceeds through affairs however he pleases,
No medicine nor any other (remedy)
Suffices to cure him of his nature.
So why engage in reproaching one who has no shame
When it brings nothing but trouble?

However, given that keeping silent about such a one exposes many innocent people to the (danger of) slipping behind him and being affected by his accusations and falsehoods, it becomes necessary to refute him and expose his fabrications, so that “those who perish [might] perish upon clear evidence and those who live [might] live upon clear evidence.” (8:42-)
